walkathonsun2011 Puesta del Sol Walkathon

Please join us for the 10th Annual Walkathon fundraiser. This is a festive after-school event where family, teachers, and staff support our students as they walk laps.  It is truly a great way to meet or re-connect with the Puesta del Sol community, all while raising funds for the school and its programs.   Families bring blankets, chairs, even picnic baskets (but no pets please).

WALKATHON IS THIS FRIDAY!

WHEN: Friday, September 23, 2011 from 3:30-6pm. Rain or shine.
WHERE: Puesta del Sol – north end covered areas and “sandy” play field

WHY: Build community. Raise funds. Launch school spirit.

HOW: RSVP at www.puestadelsoleventregistration.com
.

Is your child registered yet? Registration Closes Tuesday 9/20.

Registration is easy this year at www.puestadelsoleventregistration.com. We'd love to hear from you, even if your child is not participating. (Don’t let your child be confused on Walkathon day!) RSVP so we can send them in the right direction at the bell. Permission is required for participation. Troubles with online registration? Contact Sandi at sanditampa@windermere.com.

Help if you can – volunteer, bake, buy.

We need VOLUNTEERS before/during/after the event. Please contact Jessica at heringer@comcast.net. Not sure? Offer to help with clean-up at the Walkathon and Book Fair.

We need individually-packaged SNACKS to sell at the Tapas y Dulces Table -- baked goods, tasty treats, popcorn, candy, jerky, fruit & veggies. Contact Kandi at kandi@dodrill.net.

Tapas y Dulces (bake sale items) will be offered again for $1. Raffle tickets offered at $1 each. (Only adults can buy tickets.)

Be sure to check out the new Spirit Wear line-up and the library's Scholastic Book Fair. Want to get that Walkathon pledge paid? Bring your checkbook and pay at the Walkathon!

A few words about event day:

Más Vueltas:
The boy and the girl in each grade who walk the most laps around the field will receive a medal at a school assembly in October. If your child is a medal contender, be sure to check out at the end of the event to log the number of laps walked. Kids earn credit for 1 lap as they pass the lap counters for that grade. Only full laps around the school track qualify toward the medal count. Kids who make “fake” credits or repeatedly cut corners may lose lap credits or be disqualified from the medal competition (but can still enjoy the fun).

Race Numbers:We are using race numbers on the kids this year. They are adhesive and will stick to the kids' clothes. Lap Counters will track numbers on clipboards.

Los Pańuelos: All walkers who participate receive a bandana in the student’s grade color. Send kids in class colors on Friday for a more colorful event!
Kindergarten = Red    3rd Grade = Green
1st Grade = Orange       4th Grade = Blue
2nd Grade = Yellow (yellow)       5th Grade = Purple

This is a family event, but please NO PETS. Set up camp on the hill or around the sides of the track. Bring chairs, tents, dinner, drinks; but please, no dogs or other pets. Picture small area filled with food, children and noise. If animals arrive, we will have to ask you to take them home. Awkward!

Parking
can be tough. Carpooling is suggested. Please be considerate: School buses still run, families still pick up children from childcare (until 6:15p), and neighbors must still use their driveways and roads. Parking will be available on one side of the street only and strictly enforced.

Last minute changes are sometimes inevitable but add work for PTA volunteers. Please call the PTA office at (425) 456-6143. Messages checked regularly.

You registered already; where's your wristband? The idea is for kids to earn the wristband by RSVP’ing early – yes or no—so that we reduce the event-day confusion with last minute registrations. Once we have enough students registered, we will give teachers the wristbands for their classes. Once the teachers receive the wristbands, each teacher will decide when and how to distribute the wristbands so that the wristbands do not become a disruption (as they did last year). Please note: We cannot replace lost wristbands. Questions? Contact Pam Parker Halverson (pkparker@comcast.net).

Pledges remitted and received by October 17th will receive:

Students who raise $70 or more will receive their choice* of a “Puesta del Sol” window decal(2010 edition) or a pencil pouchPuesta del Sol window decal

•  Students who raise $125 (or $250/family*) will also receive their choice* of a Puesta Del Sol string bag Puesta del Sol bagor a 6-pack cooler bag.

•  Students who raise $1000 receive their choice of an iPod 8G nano, a Kindle or $150 Gift certificate to the Microsoft Store.

*One prize given to each current PDS student for families with more than two kids in the school. Choices honored while supplies last

Why wait?!  Send in your check and pledge form today!  Children may collect cash or checks, but please do not send your child to school with cash. Instead, we prefer that parents to write one check payable to Puesta Del Sol PTA for all cash collected.  Please send the total collection in an envelope clearly marked with your child’s full name and teacher’s name. Checks should be made payable to Puesta del Sol PTA.

Fundraising Goal:  We ask each student to set a goal to raise $125 (or $250/ family). With 180 days in a school year, this goal is equivalent to less than $1/school day. This is just a goal; we were delighted to have more than 470 walkers in 2010!

Matching Funds: Many companies will match your fundraising dollars. This can be an easy way to double or even triple the amount you've raised! Some of the companies who match funds locally include: Microsoft, Boeing, Adobe, Allied Signal, Amgen, Bank of America, Cigna, Coca-Cola, Key Bank, Nintendo, Puget Sound Energy, Real Networks, Toys R Us, and Verizon. Check to see if your company offers a Matching Gift Program. If you are not sure, check with your Human Resources Department. If your company doesn't match funds, ask your company if they will. You would be surprised how many companies add this program annually as an employee benefit program.
